Children’s Friend and Family Services hosted an Employee Appreciation Breakfast early this fall. Keynote speaker Catherine A. Sanderson, PhD, Department of Psychology at Amherst College, gave an inspirational talk about the “Science of Happiness” to a captive audience of almost 200 full and part-time employees. Sanderson received a bachelor’s degree in psychology, with a specialization in Health and Development, from Stanford University, and received both masters and doctoral degrees in psychology from Princeton University.
“The morning was meant to show our valued employees our appreciation with a positive message about self-care. The “Science of Happiness” was the perfect blend of practicality and positivity,” says Children’s Friend and Family Services President and CEO Carla Saccone. Children’s Friend and Family Services is a mission-driven organization that works daily to improve the lives of children and promote strong families. The staff reach over 3,000 children and families each year, on-site, at home and in school. The cornerstone of the organization is its deep connection to the community through programs like its volunteer mentor program and outreach in schools, homes and the community. Founded in Salem, MA in 1837, it is 178 years in age but modern in mindset and practices.
“I think it is so important for a staff that does such intense and demanding work to practice self-care techniques,” said Sanderson. Everyone really enjoyed the speaker and felt they took away some solid advice on promoting happiness and self-care for themselves,” said Heather Dunton Herlihy, LICSW, Gloucester Site Director.
Children’s Friend supports over 3,000 children and their families from Essex County each year with programs focusing on Mental Health Counseling, Wraparound Services, In Home Therapy, Therapeutic Mentoring, Juvenile Court Services, Teen Parenting Program, and Volunteer Youth Mentoring. Children’s Friend is one of the oldest and largest community-based counseling organizations for children and families. Offices are located in Salem, Lynn, Lawrence and Gloucester.
